What can I say about Writers Block

If you are a writer, teen or adult, then you have probably run into the all-time famous, Writers Blockade. So you ask me, what do you think?

I think writers block is very cliche and it is a very overused expression. Actually I consider it as a hyperbole. When you say, "uuugghh I don't know what to write," that's an exaggeration. You may not know what to write, but you do know what is inside your mind whenever you do want to write. I mean you want to write, right? why'd you take out a paper and pen anyway?

And yet, you chose not to write down your ideas. Shame.

I'm not saying you'll always have an idea in your head but think of why you took out a pen and paper in the first place. You have a thought but you don't know how to explain it and you won't write it down because of the following reasons:

  1. You think it's a terrible idea
  2. You think that people will think it's a terrible idea
  3. You don't know exactly how to say it on paper
  4. The content in your head is not PG ( may happen with very expressive writers)
The first two reasons are very common, too common for me to even stand. common answer: don't worry, nothing is a terrible idea. just working ones, and you need to suck it up and write it down.

That is true but we have inner opinions about our own writing and sometimes, we just don't like writing them down. What I say, is remember why you wanted to write in the first place, if you think your reason a terrible idea and you're worried about what other people may think, you might as well throw your writing dreams out the window because you will never gain anything without having confidence in your reasons of why you write.

A little harsh, I know, but if you remember why you always wanted to write your brain will start exploding words on the page.

Third reason, not as common but very possible. You have this collage of thoughts in your head and you don't know how to form it into an idea.

First put it on paper. What I mean is to put fragments or unfinished ideas or pictures from your mind and put it SOMEWHERE.

When you have your collage of thoughts in one place, you will see something. An idea, a new thought, or even a completely original concept for your writing! It's really cool I have done it so many times and left the paper with millions of ideas that may not even go together, but I have a completed thoguht.
Now for four, you feel something really strong but you don't want to write it down is because of fear of the content of your writing. Some writers may experience this, and I'll tell you something to keep in mind.

Some of the best writing is from memorable work that gives in every horrid feeling, no matter what the content. You don't need people saying it's good, you need people to be effected by your writing.

So basically, remember why you started writing in the first place. Remember what you want to do to get your messege informed through your writing. Your fragmented ideas will eventually make a totally original idea and you'll surprise yourself. Think of your Huge reason of Why you write.

Throw the whole world out your window and just start writing!! You only write so much, so speak your mind and never give up! :)

  1. That's a really good point! Just because we don't think they'll be good ideas doesn't mean that they won't be! Interesting article :)

  2. Hi Josie,
Nice pep talk! And you're absolutely right...I always keep the idea that pop up in my mind or some horrible scene I have created even if they don't fit in my current writting. After a few days, I reread them and I come up with something or I paste them to my story or I keep them for later.
Never give up ! You never know when somebody may be touched by your words...
